Thank you Anphog's Wild Word of Photography This issue of AWWP will be send 3 of 5 of my adventures in Big Bend National Park in west Texas. In this issue we walk back into Grapevine Hills and then on to one of the hot spring spas by the Rio Grande River. Are you ready? OK let's go. Big Bend 3 Grapevine Hill I have no idea why this place is called Grapevine. I didn't see a single grape or vine. There were plenty of cactus, but that is to be expected in the desert. It was cold the day I was here. My guide was all bundled up trying to keep warm. This poor little Tarantula was so cold he laid in the sun hoping to get his old aching Arachnid bones warm enough to move. While my guide waited below, I climbed the trail to the top of the hill so I could look back and get this view of the trail below. There was more to climb and see but the wind was so strong it almost blew me off the trail and, since I didn't want to be an ink spot in the canyon below, I decided to climb back down. Hot Springs Spa This one lane dirt road leads back to a once popular place in the Big Bend area, The Hot Springs Spa along the Rio Grande River. This was once the residence of the caretaker but, as you can see, it hasn't been occupied in a long time. As I pulled into the parking area I captured these wild horses walking up the hill by the house in an attempt to avoid my human presence. As I started walking the path to the spa I passed the old bath house and, a little further on, this motel looking building which was used for over night guests. Following this rock wall beside the river, I continued on to the spa. At one time back in the 30's, this spa was completely enclosed but the great flood leveled it as well as taking with it assorted farm implements and crops devastating the areas agriculture and tourist trade. You can see where the base of the spa house is by looking under the water. Heated by a geothermal fault, water in the spa stays a comfortable 105 degrees year round. Across the Rio Grande you can see a Mexican gentleman trying to sell his wears to the tourists. Anphog's Wild World of Photography on Facebook. Visit and become a fan.
