In the second installment of Big Bend NP we will take a long
hike back to Cattail Falls and then visit the old Nail Farm.
Are you ready?

Cattail Falls

Beginning the long hike to the falls, I look up and see a cross
on top of this hill. Let's go investigate.

Well, I guess no one is buried here. Someone just constructed this cross from an old tree
and used barbed wire to tie it together. They definitely chose a place with a awesome
view of the valley and the mountains beyond.

Continuing down the long trail to the falls,

we start the decent into the canyon.

I know there is water close because the vegetation is getting thicker.

Walking the narrow path along the wash I see the water. Being the dry
season, there isn't much, but it's there.
An oasis in the desert.

These Butterflies have found some water in the mud and were drinking their fill.

At the falls I only see a trickle of water coming down the mountainside
but when the spring rains come it will turn into a roaring waterfall

and this little puddle of water will be a raging torrent.

Sam Nail Farm

This is all that's left of the adobe house that the Nail family called home.

Over there toward the Chisos you can see the windmill
that powers the well pump.

It's an incredible site looking up at it through the Pecan and fig trees
that it was built to water and still does.
