Big Bend
National Park 1
Part 1 of 5
Sunrise over the Chisos {Cheesos} Mountains.
Entering the park we pass an unusual mesa
and fields full of
Ocatilla {Oak-a-tee-a} Cactus.
The further we go
the bigger the mountains are.
Thirty miles down the road
past rows of roadside wild flowers,
and through this tunnel,
is the Ernst Basin
and more awesome scenery.
At the end of the park is the
Rio Grande overlook.

Across the river we see the Mexican town of
Boquillas {Bo-kee-us}

Heading back toward the park entrance I turn
left and drive to Castolon and stop for gas

then continue on to Santa Elena Canyon
where I trudged
through the mud of Terlingua Creek where it meets the
Rio Grande on the North side of the canyon.
Following the 1.7 mile trail back into the canyon to one of the
narrowest points in the gorge, I pass these beautiful
yellow flowers hanging on the side of the cliff.

At the end of the trail I am deep in Santa Elena Canyon.
Santa Elena Canyon is 8 miles long, 1,500 feet deep, and only
30 feet wide in some places. Carved over hundreds of
years by the waters of the Rio Grande River.
